RC Yacht Racing – the Fun Way!

When it comes to RC yacht racing, you have two options. Go full out, starting with a Rule Book to study, or join Northern City Radio Sailing and just follow the Rules of the Road.

Northern City Radio Sailing offers you a place where you can regularly meet likeminded people with an interest in radio controlled model yachts to have fun, play and just relax after a hard day’s work.

Exclusively for electric radio controlled model boat owners, Sonstraal Dam is the only waterbody in the City of Cape Town demarcated for RC boating.

Northern City Radio Sailing is a Chapter of the Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club and is the first of the “New Generation Clubs” that was established after this demarcation opened the door to end a decade of exclusivity at a public park.

What is a “new generation club”?

A New Generation Club is a club that is affiliated with the Model Boating Association of South Africa and is open to people who has a “can do” attitude and who is willing to play hard, work hard and laugh loud; people who are young at heart and enjoy being part of a very unique and rewarding recreational activity.

Traditional clubs have committees, and from experience we know these committees are often the reason why nothing moves forward into the 21st century. You can spot a traditional club by its website. Just try to use your phone.

Some of the characteristics of a New generation club member are:

• Forward thinking and active in club activities with a willingness to participate,
• Go-getters who is willing to adapt to change and progress,
• People willing to give as much as they take,
• People who dislike club politics and infighting,
• People who like to see their achievements become part of the Club’s repertoire,
• People who support each other through learning and mentoring,
• People who see themselves as “old dogs who master new tricks”,
• People who can come with ideas, and see their ideas come to life; not brushed off, and
• People who have integrity and a high regard for responsible recreation.

Our Vision

At the Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club, it is our vision to facilitate Radio Controlled Model Boating Activities as a Recreational Sport and Hobby for the benefit of all stakeholders, including the residents around Sonstraal Park and the dam.

We constantly strive to create innovative ways to have fun.

We advocate improvement of Sonstraal Dam as the only demarcated dam in the City of Cape Town where radio controlled model boats may be used.

We believe in rewards for a job well done, and regard each member as a part of the team that makes RC boating a lifestyle, and not just a way to pass the time waiting for the Ring of the Bell.

Our Approach

The traditional model boat clubs with their dictators, chairpersons and committees have been instrumental in the gradual decay of RC boating, mostly because not all good people are good leaders.  Leadership does not come from a position of power. It comes from a vision within.  And at the Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club, we know that these leaders will rise to the occasion, not because they are nominated at an AGM, but because they are born to lead by example; not by rule book. The time of the “founding fathers” no longer has relevance in a modern society.

The Cape Town Scale Model Boat Club is not a “member” based club, but more a destination; a place, where people can meet to have a bit of recreational fun using our own model boats. Our strength does not lie in how many people we can write up for annual fees, but in how many people are participating in our activities.

We are a member of the Model Boating Association of South Africa, an umbrella association of RC boat clubs that subscribes to a Code of Conduct and Ethics responsible for the promotion of RC boating in South Africa and the management of digital membership cards and RC boating permits.

We are the New Generation of Free Spirited people.
